CODA: Jerry Garcia’s poor dietary habits and ongoing struggles with drug addiction led to his falling into a diabetic coma in 1986. He recovered and continued to play, but his physical decline continued. On August 9, 1995, the fifty-three-year-old suffered a fatal heart attack during a stay at a rehabilitation clinic. The Grateful Dead formally disbanded soon afterward. Surviving members reunited in various bands over the years, culminating with the 2015 series of concerts billed as “Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of the Grateful Dead.” The lineup for these shows included longtime members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart, and Phish’s Trey Anastasio on guitar.
